Do I Need Planning Permission for Solar Panels in Ireland?

Dreaming of turning your rooftop into a sun-powered energy station? Good news – as of October 2022, planning permission for solar panels in Ireland is virtually extinct for homes and most buildings. Say goodbye to red tape and hello to clean, renewable energy!
The limit for homes used to be capped at 12 square metres, and businesses at 50, but those restrictions are gone. You can now install as many solar panels as your roof can fit (within safety regulations). This opens up a world of possibilities for homeowners, farmers, businesses, schools and community groups who are eager to reduce their carbon footprint and energy bills, all while having the satisfaction of knowing that they’re living sustainably.
However, a few exceptions still exist:
- Solar Safeguarding Zones: If your property is not used for domestic purposes, and is located near an airport or other sensitive areas, a maximum of 300 square meters applies. This also applies to apartment blocks. Check with your local authority for details.
- Architectural conservation areas: If the property is a protected structure, it may still be subject to planning permission regulations.
- Free-standing and wall-mounted solar panels: Houses and apartments are exempt from filing for planning permission when the solar panel systems are under 25 square metres. For all other categories, such as industry and agriculture, the limit is increased to 75 square metres.
